Ask Matty - June 3rd

June 3rd 2013

If you're looking for a firm answer on the status of Yvonne Craig's likeness rights, details on future mystery sales, or any other definitive answer from the world of Mattel, this might be the post for you!

But in reality, you're probably going to be disappointed by a few deflections instead. You can see all the questions we asked and the newest "answers" from Mattel representatives below.

DASH: Spirit of Hordak has been an adventure. Are we going to see future "chase" figures on in MotUC or in other brands?

Matty: Keep checking out the site! We're not going to spill the beans here!

DASH reader Chris: Gizmodo's article "Where Toys Come From" (4/22/13) confirmed what many 3.75 inch figure fans suspect. A new 6 inch figure line for a recent "iron" threequel comic movie; appears 3D printed and scanned from its previous old sequel 3.75 inch line. Can you do the same? Whereas 3D printing and scanning (old 6 inch figures) can make new 3.75 inch lines?  Many collectors buy only 3.75 inches; G.I.Joe, other Comic lines, and Star Wars.  Millions of fans would just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MoTU and DCUC if only they fit our 3.75” universe.

Matty: Although we certainly COULD use old and existing sculpt data and re- size it to create a scale change (say, from 6” to 3.75”), if we were going to migrate to a new scale we would most likely look at creating new sculpts to really play to the scale and offer something new and exciting for the fans who have been waiting for it. Additionally, fine details on a 6” figure can “close up” when shrunk down, so sometimes it can be easier to start from scratch rather than go through a lot of retouching!

DASH: Can we get a firm answer on the current status of Yvonne Craig's likeness rights in the '66 Batman line? Will she or won't she be joining the line?

Matty: The entire line of 2013 figures has been revealed.  The line features Batman, Surfing Batman, The Riddler, Catwoman, The Joker, and The Penguin.

DASH: Are there any plans to make figures in the Batman: Unlimited line based on the new Batman: Arkham Origins game to be released in October?

Matty: There are still a few more figure reveals for the 2013 Batman Unlimited line.  You’ll have to wait and see!

DASH: For ToyGuru: We recently ran a list of the Top 20 DC Universe Classics Figures. What are your personal top DCUC figure and why?

Matty: From ToyGuru: "I have a few. Kamandi is up there as he was the only fig I got to personally "pick". I also really dig Blue Beetle 3, Jonah Hex, Huntress and Captain Marvel (classic version)"

Matty didn't provide us with many real answers this time around, not that I blame them for deflecting our penetrating questions. We still don't know about Yvonne Craig, we don't know about Arkham Origins, and we don't know about future mystery sale figures. But we do know that Mattel will be committing to new sculpts and really focusing on their teased 3 3/4-inch line! We also know Scott Neitlich is a big fan of Kamandi and the upcoming Huntress figure, which is a good sign for that release.

You'll have to wait a few more weeks for the next edition of Ask Matty, and until then I'd like to thank Mattel for answering what questions they were able address! If you have a question you'd like to see in future editions, please take a moment to leave it in the comments below.
